The LCP Story: Where Londoners Play a Part

The story of London Community Players begins on September 23, 1974 when a small group of passionate actors, including former members of London Little Theatre, united to form what is now London Community Players. Driven by the desire to produce quality live-stage performances, this diverse group of talented amateur thespians began mounting productions at the Gallery Theatre, 36 York Street. Dozens of shows were staged in the first few years as LCP established itself in London.

Between 1974 and 1978, London Community Players presented no fewer than 35 new Canadian plays, many written by LCP members.  A number of these shows were part of LCP’s 6 play subscription series. In 1978, the group incorporated under Letters Patent. Through ardent financial management and with its history of success, LCP purchased the Gallery Theatre taking full ownership of the premises a year later.

The Story Continues...

Performance after performance saw increasing interest from audiences and playwrights, moving LCP to quickly realize they were outgrowing their York Street home. It became clear that the limitations of the 99 seat Gallery were no longer suited to meeting patron or production needs. The Board and membership recognizing the building’s limitations began exploring the possibility of renovating the Gallery space. This option was shelved when the Park Movie Theatre on Dundas Street East became available for purchase. This marked a turning point as the vision of a full-scale theatre venue emerged. The Park Theatre’s 350 seat auditorium, along with the extra production and lobby space made this a more viable project than the redevelopment of the Gallery. After much deliberation, LCP made the decision to embark on the biggest challenge of its existence. The group purchased the Palace (aka The Park) in 1990.
